Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Community of Practice?

A Community of Practice (CoP) is a form of faculty professional development that is a partnership of learning among groups of people with a shared purpose. CoP participants share pedagogical innovations and discuss the details regarding different pedagogical approaches. They also promote the use of scholarship in teaching and learning and can lead to participants conducting their own scholarly projects in pedagogical innovation in their classrooms. Our CoP will be composed of STEM faculty, primarily from various engineering disciplines. We will meet in-person to foster the collaborative nature of a community of faculty.

What is a Self-Paced Learning Module?

Similar to the CoPs, we have developed programming online that will provide access to all the reading materials that will be discussed in the CoP. Participants who select to complete the self-paced modules will be provided with a recommended syllabus and reading plan that will closely follow the CoP programming. Additionally, a virtual platform has been created for asynchronous discussion, coordination, and collaboration among the members of the self-paced learning groups. The self-paced learning participants will be able to progress through the material on their own time (with some time parameters), allowing for flexibility of completion, and also opportunity to those that would like to participate in the CoP but unable to travel to the programming site to be in-person.

Do I need to attend all sessions and/or complete all modules?

In-person participants are encouraged to attend all sessions and must complete at least five of six to be eligible for the incentive. Self-paced modules must be fully completed for incentive eligibility.

Where is Marquette University?

Marquette University is located in Milwaukee, WI. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is an excellent place to visit in the summer.

Will lunch be provided?

In-person attendees will have lunch provided for all sessions.

Is there parking?

Free parking will be provided for in-person participants.

What type of time commitment is this?

Six 4-hour sessions will be conducted on select Thursdays from 9 AM to 1 PM. Online, self-paced participants will have approximately 24 hours of content over 6 modules to complete. Participants will only be placed in the Community of Practice OR the Self-Paced Modules. Participants from both groups will participate in interviews with the research team.

Why should I participate?

This effort will provide for collaborative, engaging discussions of education theories in engineering. Participants will learn human-centered approaches to engineering education and expand their network of engineering faculty.

BETTER is an NSF-funded research initiative through Award No. 2236075 in partnership with Marquette University.
